Project Project Project

i did not get any project done today!! Fundamental Of Flight Project is a hell lor.. Classmates please start forming ur groups and start doing.. It really is going to give you a big headache. Spent the whole day doing and researching and playing of course. When Ivan is there in Woodlands regional library, there will be no peace. MUAHAHAHAHA!!! Window shopping and arcade with james. not to mention eat and eat with him.. Like some hungry ghost, go everywhere only think of food.

MM2504 Fundamentals of Flight
ASSIGNMENT
FIXED WING AIRCRAFT RESEARCH
1. This assignment is a group effort where each group will consist of no more than
FOUR students.
2. You are to submit an independently researched paper tracing major significant
historical developments in Aviation from flights of fancy to the present.
3. Your submission will include:

Section A: General Concepts

A. A brief description of the significant contributions to Aviation Technology (in
correct chronological order) by each of the following list of Aviation Pioneers
namely:
 George Cayley
 Ludwig Prandtl
 Montgolfier brothers
 Leonardo da Vinci
 William Samuel Henson
 Otto Lilienthal
 Igor Sikorsky
 Glenn Curtiss
 Chuck Yeager
 Richard Whitcomb
 Wright brothers
 Samuel Langley

B. Research on the New Development in Aerodynamics Concepts and Aerofoil.
Students may use the simulation software FoilSim II to investigate how an aircraft
wing produces lift by changing the values of different factors that affect lift. (It may also be used to visualize the theoretical flow around objects of other shapes such as a ball (and airfoils.)
http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/foil2.html

C. Research on the different Propulsion Systems in use and working principle.
(Example: Piston Engine, Gas Turbine Engine, Rockets, etc.)

D. New Development in Aircraft Structures and Materials.

E. New developments in experimental aircraft concepts.

Section B – Wing Configuration

F. Provide a brief explanation on the purpose for use of each of the following wing
configurations:
 Adjustable (or variable) sweep
 Anhedral
 Canard
 Dihedral
 Forward Sweep
 Winglet

You are to confine your explanation/description to 400 characters.
a. Obtain an image (photograph) of an aircraft using each of above different
wing configurations.

b. Research and explain the role of chosen aircraft.

c. Research and obtain external dimensions of chosen aircraft.
 Wing Span
 Length of Fuselage
 Height over Vertical Stabiliser
 Tail plane (Horizontal Stabiliser)

d. Research Obtain the Performance of Each Aircraft.
 Cruising Speed
 Take-Off and Landing Distance
 Maximum Endurance
 Maximum Range

e. Draw a 3-view sketch (engineering drawing) of any one aircraft chosen in
part a. above.
 The sketch will be in pencil on standard A3 size tracing paper (with
title block and margins) using largest convenient standard scale.
 Neatness and clarity are important. Outlines are to be bold enough to
yield a clear print and dimension lines are to be light lines. You are
advised use drawing instruments and French curves where necessary.
 Overall dimensions such as span, length and height, as well as landing
gear track and wheel base should be shown SI units.
 The sketch will include a Title block (Title/Name/Date/Scale) and a
clear margin of at least 1.5cm on all 4 sides.

NOTE: Assignment is a group effort where information requested is to be written in your own words. CUT and PASTE from internet sources is NOT allowed. You may however use pictures and diagrams obtained from internet sources and books. Marks will only be awarded for original work. All References to be acknowledged. The report will contain a complete contents page.

Format of report:
 Font size: 12 pts
 Font type: New Times Roman
 Spacing: 1.5 lines
 Margins: Standard
 Printing: Double-sided
 Page number: Footer, right

All assignments must be on A4 paper and submitted in a suitable
transparent cover folder. This assignment requires a formal report.
Assignments shall be submitted during tutorial or laboratory class
during designated week for submission.
Marks shall be DEDUCTED for late submissions.

Class Reps will collate the softcopies of all submissions for whole class
and hand in as a single CD along with hardcopies of reports.
